What's in the Greenhouse?

Last week was the average typical last frost date for our area and without the greenhouse most farmers would have been sunk when those cold nights hit not too long ago. The greenhouse at Stoney Lonesome is stock full of good stuff ready to find its home in the ground. I'm thinking that Pablo, Esther and Diana have their work cut out for them over the next few weeks.

Some of you can probably name every plant you see while the rest of us are left guessing what each might produce. And the varieties that are available are amazing - nothing boring in our kitchens this summer!

Flowers, herbs, and vegetables - they are all there
waiting for their transfer to the ground.
Any volunteers?

Are You Counting Down til Season 8 Begins?

Stoney Lonesome Farm's 8th CSA Harvest Season will begin in just 3 short weeks, if all stays on track, and things at the farm are beginning to look quite green. I made a short trip there this week to see what was coming up and to anticipate the treats ahead. It felt like Christmas with little presents being unwrapped as I walked along the garden edge and read the tags on each row. Lots of treats in store..here's a sneak peek of just a few...

You can count on the Swiss Chard - this one is called "Bright Lights"

Onions are standing straight and tall -
seems like just yesterday they were planted,

Peas are loving the warm sunshine now that their covers are off

All of the gardens are lookin' good and full of deliciousness .

2011 has begun

"Many hands make light work" was proven on Sunday, April 17, when CSA members and friends turned out to help plant onions. The work went quickly and late comers arrived to find Farmer Pablo tilling more ground to plant even more varieties. Get your onion recipes ready! if all goes as planned we'll be enjoying lots of onions.

Pablo and his crew have been busy over the winter months preparing for another season of good harvest but also working on developing the farm itself. A walking trail was developed which leads right through a beautiful stretch of bluebells along Broad Run river. I can only imagine how gorgeous the woods will be in another week or two when all the bluebells are in bloom.
