Spring Has Arrived and Summer is Close Behind





At Stoney Lonesome that means that Harvest Days are soon to begin. Just to wet your whistle, let's talk about strawberries. Strawberries are a new crop at Stoney Lonesome this year and have been plentiful over the last few weeks. Hopefully many of you were able to take advantage of the invitation to join us for strawberry picking a few weeks ago; luscious, sweet, plump, juicy berries ready to eat plain or process into a variety of treats.

While there is nothing better than tasting the freshness of a just picked berry, the ideas for sweet strawberry temptations doesn't stop there.

For breakfast try them in a smoothie or on top of some yogurt with a drizzle of honey and a spoonful of granola, or bake some strawberry oatmeal muffins. If you are really adventurous and the strawberries are plentiful, make freezer jam to spread over scones or toast. (See below - I used a variety of size jars)

For lunch, try a strawberry salad. Just cut up some fresh strawberries (or leave tiny ones whole), crumble a little feta cheese and add some fresh mint leaves. Delicious on its own or on top of a plate of fresh spinach.

And of course the same is true for dinner. Try a fresh strawberry salsa on top of a grilled chicken breast or alongside a balsamic marinated pork chop. And what is dinner without a small sweet treat at the end. Perhaps you'd like a strawberry sauce on a scoop of ice cream, or strawberries and cream, or the classic strawberry shortcake, or my personal favorite strawberry rhubarb cake with whipped cream.
